These sansevierias have for many years had been sold and labeled as S. sp. (Socotra-LAV 309), for the large form, and S. sp. (Socotra-LAV 307) for the small form. Based on the following information, quoted in part from an article by Juan Chahinian, the plants should be named as Sansevieria sp. 'Lavranos 5949' (for the large form) and S. sp. 'Lavranos 5933' for the small form. "With all the information on hand, one is able to draw the following conclusions: a) These plants may not be called Sansevieria Lav. 309 or Lav. 307 since these are sequential numbers that were assigned by I.S.I. to plants collected by Lavranos, whose numbers in 1967 had not three but four digits. b) These sansevierias come from Mozambique not Kenya, in fact they were collected in (word not readable) which is located less than 150 and 250 miles respectively from Beira, type locality (word not readable) Sansevieria concinna. The reason for this confusion may well be explained by the fact that from March through June 1967, Lavranos was engaged in a collection trip to the Island of Socotra and went on a collection trip to Mozambique in July and August of that same year, making it (word not readable) for I.S.I. to assume that these sansevierias came from Socotra instead of Mozambique. To summarize, the sansevierias in question should be called Sansevieria sp. 'Lavranos 5949' from Mozambique, for the large form and Sansevieria sp. 'Lavranos 5933' from Mozambique, for the dwarf one, until formally described. This is the most plausible identification for these plants at present. Whether any of these Sansevierias or the ones from Lake Sibaya, or all three are Sansevieria concinna, remains to be seen. Their affinity to it is quite apparent." Until a formal description is presented, I accept Juan's information as gospel and now have the plants labeled per this information. |
